Girls Empowerment and Movement Class (GEM)
Frequency: Once a week
Duration: 1 hour
Target group: Females in grades 6-12. (5th grade with approval)
Vision: To empower and guide young females through difficult situations they face in and out of school.
Purpose: To empower minds through conversation and decision making and to empower bodies through movement. During my experience working with pre-teen and teenage females, I have noticed that decision-making lacks knowledge and most of all self-esteem. I want to develop a safe environment where they can strengthen their social and emotional skills. Then, as their self-esteem grows we can work through ideas and decisions as a community of empowered individuals ready to make healthy choices and achieve success as they grow into adulthood.
Structure:
● The class will start with a 40 minute “community circle.” This circle will be structured around a different topic each week with an interactive activity about that topic. The goal is to build community and trust within the group.
● The next 20 minutes will consist of movement, such as stretching, yoga and learning different styles of dance, meditation, breathwork, and more.
Units:
I cover 5 Units throughout the program and many different topics within the program.
Unit 1: Self-Esteem
Unit 2: The Power of Decision Making
Unit 3: Self Care; physical and mental health
Unit 4: Communication
Unit 5: Gratitude
