Horticulture/Landscape Construction
The Horticulture/Landscape Construction program is a student-centered, project-based learning environment that prepares students for careers in "Green Industries" including sustainable agriculture and engineering, greenhouse production, parks and grounds management and landscape design, construction and maintenance.
As a Horticulture/Landscape Construction student, you'll explore and discover environmentally safe ways to power and run the systems that support industries and discover new ways to maintain appropriate environmental controls. This program is about saving the planet and finding innovative solutions to problems in a manner that is in harmony with nature.
As a design/build program, students plan, design and implement potential alternative energy sources such as photovoltaic, solar, geothermal and wind to help power the MST greenhouses and the homes constructed by MST students.
Through active participation in the design and construction of two homes and the management of our greenhouses, students are able to demonstrate their understanding of sustainable practices and apply them in real world applications. The Green Industry is one of the fastest growing employment sectors in New England and this program helps prepare students to overcome the many challenges of entering this emerging industry.
Recent graduates of this program have established their own horticultural enterprises and others continue their education toward a two or four-year degree in areas such as sustainable agriculture, horticulture, floriculture/greenhouse management and landscape architecture. Stockbridge School of Agriculture at UMass Amherst will grant three (3) academic credits to Green Technology graduates from Manchester School of Technology who are accepted to Stockbridge (Stockbridge School of Agriculture).
This program combines chemistry, engineering, physics, economics, finance, design and industrial safety as students explore new solutions for known problems and understand and react to issues that affect local and global communities.
Students in this program will lead the country with "Solution-Centered Learning and Student-Centered Solutions."
Program Requirement:
Students must be 16 years old by November 1st of the enrollment year
